Safe Travel is the official source of advice of the New Zealand Government for New Zealanders traveling or living overseas.


Within this site you will find a detailed travel advisory section which shares information about potential risks you may encounter overseas, allowing you to make well-informed decisions about your journey.  You can even look up helpful travel safety tips, general health advice and find out what to do and who to contact if your passport is lost or stolen whilst overseas (tip: take a copy of your passport and store it in a separate location as this will assist you when asked for your passport number).


Safe Travel recommends you register your travel plans so in an emergency you can be contacted and provided assistance if needed. This is incredibly important as in the past where New Zealanders who were thought to be in an area affected by a cyclone, major earthquake or bomb blast overseas – those who have registered their travel contact details have often been accounted for first.

The Ministry of Health offers information on Reciprocal Health Agreements with Australia and the UK.  As there are a range of services that are not publicly funded and that neither reciprocal agreement provides full coverage, the Ministry of Health recommends that travellers should hold comprehensive travel insurance, including health insurance
